The Darajani Market
The Darajani Market
Darajani Market is one of the busiest market in Stone Town. The market was established during the early twentieth century and has continued to serve as the central place where Zanzibaris buy fresh food, household supplies, and spices.
The main building was constructed during the time of the British Protectorate. It has high ceilings, wide entrances, and open spaces that allow fresh air to move through the market. These features were important because Darajani has always been a place where large crowds meet each day. Even as Stone Town has grown, the market has kept its original character as a traditional trading center.
Inside Darajani Market, each section has its own purpose. The fish and meat areas are usually the busiest early in the morning. Spices are sold in another part of the market, where traders display cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, and cardamom in open baskets. Fresh fruits and vegetables arrive from small farms around Unguja Island. There are also stalls where traders sell rice, cooking oils, sugar, fabrics, shoes, and everyday goods.
Darajani Market has changed with time, but it still keeps its traditional feel. It remains an important part of Stone Town culture and a place where visitors can see how locals shop and live.
