The history of Ruaha National Park began in 1910 with the establishment of the Saba Game Reserve under German Colony. This area was expanded by the British in 1946 and renamed Rungwe Game Reserve. In 1964, the southern portion was designated as Ruaha National Park, and in 1974, an additional area southeast of the Great Ruaha River was included. The park’s final expansion occurred in 2008 with the addition of the Usangu Wetland, Completing Its current boundary.
Ruaha National Park is home to several cultural and historical sites. The burial site of the Gogo Chief Mapenza is located within the park, along with other significant sites like Ganga la Mafunyo, Nyanywa, Chahe, and Painting Rock. It’s recommended to visit these sites with a guide for a better understanding of their cultural importance.
The park also has varying altitudes. The Great Ruaha River is at an elevation of 750m to 1000m, while the western part of the park reaches 1868m. The northern area has an average altitude of 1400m. Ruaha National Park covers an area of 20,226 km², offering diverse landscapes to explore.
