Tarangire National Park is a popular National Park that is situated in the heart of Manyara Region. In the Park there is the Tarangire river that give the National Park Its name. The river flows throughout the year providing a constant source of water for the wildlife, this is very important for the animals in Tarangire especially during the dry season(June to November)when other temporary water sources dry up. Various wildlife such as elephants,zebras,and wildebeest congregate along the riverbanks to drink water, making the river a great place for wildlife viewing. Tarangire National park has roughly 2850 square Km.The topography mainly consist of Acacia Woodland, Baobab trees and grassland.

Elephant Population
Tarangire is known in Africa for large herds of elephants. Elephants in Tarangire like those in anywhere else are Matriarchal, where by their herds are led by the eldest female known as the matriarch. Elephants are herbivores and consume a vast amount of vegetation daily, including grasses, leaves, bark, and fruit. The large elephant Population in Tarangire is the result of successful conservation efforts in the area. The Park provides protected habitat where all these elephants can thrive. Elephants play a crucial role in shaping the environment of Tarangire National Park. They act as “ecosystem engineers” by knocking down trees, which creates open spaces for other wildlife and helps maintain the Park’s landscape. By consuming large amounts of vegetation and fruit, elephants help disperse seeds over wide areas, promoting plant diversity and regeneration.
Baobab Trees
Baobab trees are characterized by their massive, swollen trunks and sparse, spindly branches. The trees can grow to impressive heights, with trunks that can reach diameters of up to 10 meters. These trees are ancient with some estimated to be over 1,000 years old. Baobab trees produce leaves that are typically palmate (hand-shaped) and fall off during the dry season. They also produce large, white flowers that bloom at night. The hollow trunks of baobab trees provide shelter for various animals, including birds, bats, and insects. Some larger hollows can even accommodate larger animals and humans.
