Highlights In Udzungwa !!

Overview of the Udzungwa Mountain National Park

Udzungwa Mountains National Park, located in Kilolo District of Iringa Region, was officially gazetted as a national park in 1992. Covering an area of 1,990 square kilometres, this park is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains one of the most important areas for biodiversity in Africa.

What makes Udzungwa unique is that it has no roads inside. The entire park is explored on foot, making it a perfect destination for those who love hiking and trekking in nature. This untouched wilderness offers a refreshing escape from the typical safari experience.

One of the most popular hikes is the Sanje Waterfalls Trail, which takes about 4 hours. This scenic trail leads you through lush tropical forests to the stunning Sanje Falls, where water drops from about 170 meters. Along the way, visitors may spot colourful birds, butterflies, and monkeys. You can also enjoy a swim in the natural pools at the base of the falls.

Udzungwa is also known for its rare and unique primates that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, including the Iringa red colobus, Udzungwa red colobus, and the Sanje crested mangabey.

The park is also home to over 400 bird species, many of which are endemic to the Eastern Arc Mountains, including the Rufous-winged sunbird and the Udzungwa forest partridge. In addition to birds and primates, the park hosts a wide range of plant species, making it a favorite spot for botanists and nature photographers.
