Highlights In the Arusha National Park

🗺️Overview of Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is one of the greatest lakes in Africa and the largest by area, covering about 59,947 square kilometres. It is also the world’s largest tropical lake and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world.

The lake gets about 80% of its water from direct rainfall, while the rest comes from rivers and thousands of small streams. The Kagera River is the largest river flowing into Lake Victoria. Water from the lake flows out through the River Nile, which begins near Jinja in Uganda.

Lake Victoria is home to a wide variety of life. Mammals found around the lake include hippopotamus, African claw-less otter, spotted-necked otter, and marsh mongoose. Reptiles such as the Nile crocodile, African helmeted turtle, and Williams’ mud turtle are also found here.

The lake is especially famous for its fish, with Nile perch and tilapia being the most well-known. It also supports many unique species of cichlid fish. For bird lovers, the lake area is rich with species such as African fish eagles, kingfishers, and herons.

Beyond wildlife, Lake Victoria plays an important role in the lives of local people. It supports fishing communities, provides water, and serves as a transport route between Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Its beautiful islands and scenic shores also make it a place for relaxation and exploration.
