Exploring Mahale: A Unique Sanctuary for Chimpanzees and More

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s two protected areas dedicated to the conservation of chimpanzees. It is home to the largest population of the Eastern chimpanzee subspecies and it has different 11 primate species. The park is located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, which is the world’s second-largest and second-deepest freshwater lake.

The park is unique because there are no roads, trails, or infrastructure within its boundaries. This means that all exploration is done on foot, offering visitors an up-close experience with nature. The only way to reach the park is by boat across Lake Tanganyika, adding to its remote and untouched appeal.

In Mahale, lions and chimpanzees live alongside other primates such as yellow baboons, blue monkeys, red and pied colobus, vervet monkeys, and several species of galagos. The park offers an unforgettable adventure into Tanzania’s wilderness, with lush mountains, diverse wildlife, and natural beauty waiting for those who seek a truly adventurous experience.
