Highlights In Saanane Island National Park

🗺️ Overview of the Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island National Park is a small but very special park right in the heart of Lake Victoria. Found within Ilemela District in Mwanza, it is named after Saanane Chavandi, a local fisherman who once lived on the island. Although it only covers 2.8 square kilometres, it holds the title of being the first-ever national park located on a fresh water lake in Tanzania. The park was officially established in 2013, making it one of the youngest national parks in the country.

Despite its size, Saanane Island is home to a surprising variety of wildlife. You’ll find impala, zebra, wildebeest, klipspringer, rock hyrax, dik-dik, vervet monkeys, and even otters along the shoreline. Crocodiles can also be spotted basking in the sun, while birdlife is abundant, with fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers among the many species that fill the skies. The park has both indigenous animals and some introduced species, making it a unique blend of wildlife in one compact setting.

What makes Saanane Island stand out is not only the wildlife but also its peaceful setting. Visitors can take a short boat ride from Mwanza city, enjoy a picnic on the island, or take gentle nature walks with wide views of Lake Victoria and the city’s rocky hills in the distance. Fishing, birdwatching, and boat trips are also popular activities here.

Because of its easy access and beautiful lake surroundings, Saanane is the perfect getaway for families, day-trippers, and anyone wanting a taste of wildlife without going too far from the city.
