12-Day Tanzania Safari & Beach Holiday

Trip Overview

This 12-day Tanzania safari and beach adventure promises exciting game viewing, stunning landscapes, interesting cultural interactions, and dreamy days on the tropical spice island paradise of Zanzibar!

During the first seven days of the itinerary, you will visit three of Tanzania’s most famous national parks – Tarangire, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater – for some of the best game viewing in the world! To make your safari even more meaningful, we have also included a couple of local village visits, during which you will gain a better understanding of Tanzanian life and traditions.

After these wonderful experiences on the mainland, you will spend the remaining days on the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar. White, sandy beaches stretching for miles and the warm azure waters invite you to relax. Your visit includes a guided walk through historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its winding alleys, grand architecture, bustling bazaars, former sultans’ palaces, mosques, and ornate doors. You will also visit one of the island’s spice farms; You won’t just see…you will also touch, smell, and taste!

DAY 1: Arrival – Welcome to Tanzania!

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your Tansafari-Tours driver-guide, who will transfer you to your hotel in Arusha and brief you about your safari.

DAY 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

Your driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation after breakfast and, together, you will head to Tarangire National Park with packed lunches for the first game viewing of your Tanzanian safari. Lesser kudu, eland, gerenuk, and lion – among other  animals – can be seen in this beautiful park, famous for its huge elephant population and its multitude of majestic baobab trees, some of which are more than 1,000 years old!

Late afternoon/early evening, head to you accommodation in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: MTO WA MBU CULTURAL DAY

After breakfast, you will head to the local farming village of Mto Wa Mbu (Swahili for “Mosquito River”), where you can enjoy a guided walk or bike ride. The village is considered unique in Tanzania in that it is estimated that all of Tanzania’s 120 tribes are represented there. The walk/bike ride will take you to see local farms, schools, homes, milling machines, and more. Afterward, you will enjoy a home-cooked Tanzanian lunch. Late afternoon, you will return to your accommodation in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: Maasai VIllage & the Serengeti

After breakfast, you will proceed to the world-famous Serengeti, but not before visiting an authentic Maasai village. Here, you will learn more about the rituals and way of life of one of Tanzania’s most famous tribes.

After this rich cultural experience, you will return to your vehicle and continue onward to the Serengeti National Park’s Naabi Hill Gate – the entry point for this spectacular wildlife habitat. While your driver-guide takes care of the administrative details, you can stretch your legs with a walk to the small lookout point and admire the beautiful views.

Finally, you will return to your vehicle and enjoy your first Serengeti game drive on the way to your accommodation.

DAY 5: Full Day in the Serengeti

Enjoy your first full day of game viewing in the Serengeti, with packed lunches.  In the Maasai language, “seringit” means “endless plains” and you will soon understand why! The Serengeti National Park stretches over 15,000 square kilometers (approximately 5,790 square miles) and is quite simply the most magnificent wildlife sanctuary in the world, unparalleled in natural beauty and wilderness. After an exciting day of game viewing, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

DAY 6: FULL DAY IN SERENGETI

Today you will spend another entire day game viewing in the Serengeti. The park is famous for its annual migration when approximately 1.5 million wildebeest move en-masse throughout the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystems, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, and their hungry predators! Your guide will do his best to ensure you have the best experience possible according to the time of year you are traveling.

Early evening, return to your accommodation, where you can sip a sundowner, enjoy the sounds of the bush, and review the day’s excitement.

DAY 7: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

Rise and shine! This morning we will depart early and head straight to Ngorongoro Crater for the last game viewing of this safari. The crater is the world’s largest intact caldera and, before collapsing, was probably once the size of Mount Kilimanjaro. More than 30,000 animals live within this enormous natural bowl, including the “Big Five.”

You will descend the 600 meters (approximately 2,000 feet) to the crater floor for what promises to be an exciting day of wildlife encounters. Explore the forest areas, the lake, and the open savanna where lions roam. If you’re very lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive black rhino! Lunch will be at the hippo pool. After lunch, continue game viewing until late afternoon, when you will head to your accommodation in nearby Karatu for dinner and overnight.

DAY 8: Karatu – ARUSHA – Zanzibar

After breakfast, you will head back to Arusha, where you will be dropped off at Arusha Airport in time for your flight to the beautiful spice island of Zanzibar.

Upon arrival in Zanzibar, you will be greeted by your driver, who will transfer you to your beach accommodation.

Kick off your shoes and explore your new surroundings. Feel the sand between your toes, take your first dip in the warm ocean waters, enjoy a walk on the beach, or simply relax on a sunbed under the palm trees. You have arrived in Paradise!

DAY 9: ENJOY paradise!

Today is at your leisure. Relax with a good book by the ocean or pool, go for a walk along the beach, or take advantage of one of the many optional activities on offer: snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with the dolphins, a sunset dhow cruise, or a guided tour through Jozani Forest tour, to name but a few! Alternatively, simply relax with a book while tanning on your sunbed by the ocean or pool. There are unlimited ways to personalize your stay in Zanzibar!

DAY 10: historic Stone Town &  Spice Tour

Today you will enjoy a private guided tour of historic Stone Town, including a visit to the former slave market and other interesting sites. You will also have time to stroll through the narrow, shady streets with their small shops and bazaars.

Last but not least, you will complete your visit with a fabulous spice tour, during which your senses will come alive!! Nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, cocoa, carambola (star fruit), jackfruit, and durian are just a few of the spices and fruits that you will learn about during the tour!

Afterward, you will be driven back to your beach hotel, just in time to watch the gorgeous sunset over the Indian Ocean.

DAY 11: Day at leisure

Enjoy another day at leisure by the beach, or choose any of the optional activities on offer.

DAY 12: farewell Tanzania!

Take advantage of your last hours in this tropical paradise before flying out. The warm turquoise waters are beckoning for one last swim, and the endless stretch of beach is reaching out to you for one more walk to find that perfect shell that will become a cherished memento of your Tanzanian holiday.

Your driver will pick you up from your hotel in time to take you back to the airport for your return journey home or other onward destination
