Trip Overview

This safari is best from late November/early December through  March, when the Great Wildebeest Migration is usually in Ndutu.

Seven days on safari is a good average to enable you to get the most out of your Tanzanian wildlife adventure, seeing the main attractions without having to rush, and enjoying a bit of “downtime” here and there.

Your safari takes off from Arusha, starting with the beautiful Tarangire National Park, famous for its huge elephant herds and magnificent baobab trees. From there, your route continues through the Ngorongoro Highlands, where you will visit one of the many Maasai villages that dot the countryside before arriving on the short-grass plains of Ndutu in the southern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Next up is the famous Serengeti National Park! Here you will have the incredible opportunity to view the endless Serengeti plains and wildlife from a different perspective – up in the air – with a balloon safari! Your program comes to a royal close with a visit to the one and only Ngorongoro Crater, another of Tanzania’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the largest fully intact caldera in the world.

DAY 1: Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your Tansafari-Tours driver-guide, who will transfer you to your hotel in Arusha and brief you about your safari.

DAY 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

Your driver-guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast and, together, with lunch boxes in hand, you will drive to Tarangire National Park, for the first game viewing of your Tanzanian safari. There is no better place to enjoy a peaceful authentic safari atmosphere than in Tarangire. In addition to the elephants and towering baobab trees, you have good chances of seeing zebras, lesser kudus, elands, generuks, and lions. Late afternoon, head to your accommodation in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: Karatu – NDUTU

After breakfast, you will depart to the southern section of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, known as Ndutu, enjoying a visit to a local Maasai village along the way. There, you will learn first-hand about the Maasai tribe – their customs and way of life, and how these have changed over time. Afterward, you will enjoy some game viewing as you slowly make your way to your overnight accommodation.

DAY 4: NDUTU – Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of wildlife encounters in Ndutu, seeking out the Great Wildebeest Migration and, if traveling in February, the new wildebeest calves. Explore the open savannah grasslands in the east and the acacia woodlands in the west. Late afternoon, cross over into the Serengeti and game-drive your way to your accommodation, where you will spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

DAY 5: Central Serengeti – Balloon Safari

This morning you are in for a real treat – a hot-air balloon safari over the Serengeti plains; for most people, the flight of a lifetime! You will be collected from your accommodation before dawn and transferred to the balloon launch site, arriving in time to see your balloon being inflated. Take off as the sun rises over the hills, and experience the Serengeti from a completely different perspective. Get you cameras ready to take that perfect shot. Your ride will last 40-60-minutes, after which you will be met by the ground crew for a traditional “Champagne toast” followed by a magnificent breakfast, cooked and served in the bush. Your driver-guide will meet you after breakfast and you will spend the rest of the day together seeking out more exciting wildlife encounters in the Central Serengeti!

DAY 6: central Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

Today you will be visiting one of northern Tanzania’s main attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Ngorongoro Crater. After an early breakfast, you will head to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and drive up to the crater rim, where you will enjoy the spectacular views. You will then descend the 600 meters (about 2,000 feet) into the crater floor for what promises to be an exciting day of wildlife encounters. If you are lucky, you might even have chances of seeing the elusive balck rhino! Midday, you will stop for a picnic lunch at the hippo pool inside the crater, followed by more game viewing before heading to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

DAY 7: KARATU – Arusha – Airport

This morning, we will head back to Arusha with packed lunches, stopping at the Cultural Heritage Center, where you will have the chance to wander through the shops and admire the various crafts, before being transferred to the airport. Depending on the departure time of your outbound flight, you might be able to visit the lovely African art museum located on the premises.
